Substance Use Evaluations: What to Expect and Why They Matter
If you’ve been asked to undergo a substance use evaluation it’s likely that you’re already under some stress. It can feel intimidating and scary, especially if it’s been court-ordered. But just for a minute takes some deep breaths. We’re here to help. This process is not designed to trap you or get you into trouble. Instead, it provides you and/or the court with a professional, fair, and accurate picture of your situation.
The goal is clarity, not judgment. Whatever your circumstances are, rest easy knowing we’re not interested in shaming or blaming. Whether you’re navigating a DUI, a probation requirement, another legal matter, or something else entirely our evaluation helps determine what support, if any, you may need. Many people discover that no treatment is required, while others gain useful recommendations for moving forward in a healthier, more stable way.
What Happens During Your Telehealth Evaluation
Your substance use evaluation will take place entirely online through a secure, confidential video platform. This makes the process private, flexible, and convenient, while still meeting all potential court requirements.
- Initial Evaluation (60-90 minutes): In the first session, you will meet with our licensed clinical social worker one-on-one to discuss your history, current circumstances, and substance use patterns. You’ll also complete the SASSI-4 questionnaire, which helps identify the probability of a substance use disorder to assist the clinician in determining the best recommendations for you.
- Follow-Up Session (30-60 minutes): In the second session, you will review the results with our licensed clinical social worker who will explain what they mean and answer your questions. This ensures you clearly understand the findings before any documentation is submitted on your behalf.
- Court Documentation (if required): After both sessions are completed, our licensed clinical social worker will prepare a professional report outlining the evaluation results and any recommendations. This letter is sent directly to the court. IMPORTANT: The report will only be sent if both sessions have been completed in their entirety.
Why Courts Require These Evaluations
Courts order substance use evaluations for a number of reasons. They can help determine whether a substance use disorder exists and the level of risk or need for treatment there is for a person. These evaluations can bring light to things that could be affecting someone’s functioning in life. They can also rule out a substance use issue when one isn’t present.
Courts want information that is reliable and unbiased so that fair decisions can be made and a streamlined evaluation tool will provide that. Completing your substance use evaluation in a timely manner not only demonstrates responsibility but also ensures you meet court requirements and move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this evaluation automatically mean I need treatment?
No, not necessarily. The evaluation is about understanding your unique situation, not assuming you need treatment. Some people walk away with no recommendations for further services, while others may benefit from additional support.
How should I prepare for my evaluation?
No special preparation needed. Just come ready to share openly about your history and current circumstances. The evaluation is designed to understand your situation, not to catch you off guard. Having any court documents, legal paperwork, or personal notes handy may also be helpful, but we will guide you through each step.
How is the SASSI-4 different from other assessments?
The SASSI-4 is designed to look beyond surface-level answers. This makes it a reliable tool for helping courts and professionals understand the full picture. Most importantly, it gives you a fair, balanced evaluation rather than a quick judgment.
How and when will the results be shared with the court?
If you require court documentation to be sent on your behalf, a formal letter summarizing the results and recommendations will be sent after BOTH sessions have been completed. You’ll have the chance to review your results during the follow-up session before anything is submitted, so there are no surprises.
What happens if I don’t complete my court-ordered evaluation?
Well, that depends. If this is being ordered of you from the courts or your job, not completing it could negatively affect you. It may be in your better interest to show responsibility and cooperation by completing it in a timely manner.
