The support offered at Direct Intentions is trauma-informed and often also trauma-focused. I've found in my years of experience that unaddressed trauma underlies many of our life struggles. Trauma is subjective in nature, meaning it's self-defined and based on how you have internalized your experiences. I use an integrative and individualized method to ensure that your specific needs are met. Trauma may cause you to experience insomnia or nightmares. You may find yourself avoiding recurring thoughts or memories or even certain people and situations that remind you of the trauma. You may experience shifts in mood, moving from intense anxiety to irritability to overwhelming guilt and lack of interest in anything. We will work together to release the grip of past experiences on your present life. Specialized EMDR therapy is offered as well.
Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people engage in therapy. When untreated, it can impact many areas of your life significantly. An anxious mind is always running, often filled with worry and preoccupation on thoughts that take your attention from the present moment. Between the overthinking and constant questioning in your mind and the physiological symptoms like jittters, sweating at random, tingling in your fingers and arms, shortened breaths, and body tension, anxiety can feel like you are losing control over yourself and that can be terrifying. Some of you may experience panic attacks and find yourself hyperventilating, trembling, and feeling like you might be having a heart attack. Anxiety is debilitating. In therapy you will learn several strategies for reducing your anxiety and building your confidence to live your life with ease.
Self discovery work is a favorite of mine. The whole purpose is to gain a better understanding of who you are and how you fit into this world. It is a journey of self awareness, self acceptance, and personal growth. We will explore your thoughts and feelings, your core beliefs about yourself and others, the roles you play in your life, all of the components of your identity, and your dreams and aspirations. We will seek to understand your emotional wounds, unhealthy behavior patterns, and your defense mechanisms. Self discovery work is complex and multi-faceted. It's a deep internal process that can bring to light things that can greatly increase happiness and fulfillment in your life. The perspective you can gain with the right questions and a safe, non-judgmental environment to explore in is amazing.
Are you feeling like the spark has burnt out in your relationship? Do you struggle to see eye to eye on certain topics? Maybe you're in an open or polyamorous relationship and are having a difficult time navigating things? Or maybe you find yourself questioning whether there is a future with your partner(s)? Whatever may be going on for you, you are not alone. Relationships are hard. Each person brings there own "stuff" to the table, and it can get really confusing and frustrating trying to organize all of the history, beliefs, and emotions on your own. Therapy can help you develop the skills needed to reignite the fire of love between you and your partner(s). With another person in the room to offer perspective and support, you and your partner(s) can learn to help each other regulate emotions, improve communication, and create solutions as a team. With my guidance, you will work together to foster connection, support, and intimacy in the relationship.
Stress is something that we all deal with to some degree, some more than others. We live in a extremely demanding time; between work and home life, there are so many things taxing your energy and attention and sometimes your patience too. I work a lot with career-related stress and those that struggle with work-life balance. Stress is a significant contributor to the development of disease in our bodies; it breaks down our immune systems and disrupts the natural processes in our bodies. Chronic stress underlies many issues with mental health. It causes inflammation in the body and can exacerbate issues with depression, anxiety, PTSD, as well as our relationships, productivity at work, and ability to function normally. My approach to stress management is holistic. We will consider your current life stressors as well as what is going on internally for you to create a protocol to reduce stress, improve your functioning, and mitigate the residual impact that stress has had on you.
One of the more common issues that comes up in therapy is poor self esteem or confidence. With our reliance on technology and engagement with social media, I have noticed a major increase in low self esteem among people. We are conditioned in many ways from childhood to compare ourselves to others, and we're flooded with information through media about what is ideal and desirable. You may notice it's a lot easier for you to list out your flaws or highlight your problems, than it may be to identify your strengths and your value. Low self esteem and lack of confidence can make it very difficult to engage in social situations or perform in your job. In my work, I focus on recognizing strengths and resilience and using them to create positive change. We will explore past and present experiences that have shaped how you view yourself to create change in your thought patterns as well as implement changes in behavior to foster more self love, acceptance, and confidence.
